I remember the first time I stumbled upon Duolingo.
It was during a particularly hectic week, and I was looking for a way to unwind while still feeling productive.
Little did I know, this gamified language learning app would not only become a part of my daily routine but also teach me a heap about motivation and accountability.
It all started with a simple goal: to brush up on my French. So, I decided to give Duolingo a try (despite the criticisms it faced for offering only a basic grasp of languages).
Fast forward 90 days, and I find myself in the midst of a streak
I’m climbing up the league tables and, surprisingly, enjoying the process.
The app’s system of experience points, power-ups, and league competitions has me hooked.
This experience got me thinking about the power of gamification and how it could be applied beyond language learning, such as in a staff performance incentive system.
✅ A league table that encourages friendly cross-functional competition (because if people learning maths can compete against learning Russian, then why can’t advisers compete with CSMs)
✅ Rewards given for maintaining streaks of action that drive the right outcomes.
✅ Pairing team members together for extended periods where, if they keep each other accountable for consistency, they both benefit.
I got so into this I put all my thoughts into a document, DuoLingo > Staff Incentives, which I’d love to share with anyone who might be interested in also seeing whether this could be put to work.
Beyond that, I’m loving my Duolingo experience.
It’s reminded me of the power of consistency, how loving the process is as important as the destination, and that sometimes, all it takes is a little friendly competition to keep you on track
